Taking Care of Your Mouth Following an Extraction

Taking care of your mouth following an extraction is extremely important. Since there is an open hole in your mouth, the chances of infection increase dramatically. Infection can cause a wide assortment of problems for the patient when not properly cared for. Here at Dest Dental, we want to stress the importance of properly taking care of your extraction site after any type of procedure or surgery is done.

Tips for Care Following an Extraction

Taking Care of Your Mouth Following an Extraction There are numerous ways to help take care of your mouth following an extraction, but there are some basic recommended tips that we firmly believe that everyone should follow. This is to ensure that the bleeding stops as quickly as possible from the wound, as well as reducing the chances of infection.

  1. If you’re a smoker, you should never smoke following any type of oral procedure, especially an extraction. This can cause dry socket, which is a fairly painful condition, that can easily be avoided.
  2. Take the medication as directed by the dentist. Oftentimes this includes a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic. This is to help make you more comfortable, as well as expedite your recovery.
  3. Never stick anything inside the extraction site. Touching or poking the wound, even with your tongue, will irritate it and cause further bleeding or problems. To make matters worse, it can also introduce germs and bacteria into the wound.
  4. Only eat soft, recommended food and liquids to reduce the chances of irritating the extraction site.
  5. If there are stitches in the area, do not touch them. Usually, they’re dissolvable and will dissolve on their own within the necessary time frame.
